Annual Scholarships

Scholarships are available from this SPE chapter to students attending regional colleges.  If you are in college or are a Senior in high school please check with your school around January for scholarship information from the Powder River Basin SPE chapter. Scholarships are awarded each spring.

Application Requirements

The Powder River Basin Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers is pleased to make scholarships available to qualified applicants for the 2025-2026 academic year. Awarded amounts can range from $500 to $2,000, with the number of scholarships awarded generally ranging from 10 to 20. Scholarship applicants should have a desire to pursue a career in the oil and gas industry, and meet the following requirements:

  1. Major in Engineering (preference to Petroleum Engineering); a portion of the scholarships may go to Non-Engineering students based upon recommendations by the committee.

  2. Must be enrolled as a full-time student.

  3. Entering freshmen, sophomore, junior, or senior of a four-year program, or freshmen or sophomore of a two-year program.

Scholarship recipients will be notified via mail at a date TBD. Formal scholarship announcement will be presented at the SPE Scholarship Dinner in Gillette, Wyoming at a later date. Scholarship checks will be issued directly to the student’s college account. The winners should be aware that the awards may be subject to tax under current laws.

The 2025 SPE Golf Tournament will mark the 41st annual scholarship fundraiser. Through generous donations and support from area businesses, the SPE Golf Committee has been able to award over $250,000 in the last 35 years. These scholarships provide local youth with the encouragement to continue their education in an engineering degree.
